Hello all! This is my first time posting here.

Can anyone recommend a free tax filing service that will allow me to file my foreign income? My wife, daughter, and I lived in Denmark for all of 2018-2019 and made no money in the U.S. (and not very much in DK). We’re back in the U.S. now.

I need to file one or both of these years so I can get my family’s stimulus relief check(s). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are a US person for tax purposes, you are required to report your foreign earned income and foreign financial assets if they have an aggregate balance higher than 10k at any time during the year.

If you have low income and low foreign financial assets, you may just be required to file a 1040 tax return. Many online services are cheap.

I’m not sure it would be prudent to recommend a do-it-yourself solution for complicated international tax reporting, but everybody has different needs.

My problem filing online is that I am not able to fill out all of my employer information as my employer is not an American company and they send W2 or other forms and they don’t have federal tax number that I am required to input.

You wouldn’t be entering the income information in the section that asks for a W2 because you did not receive a w2.

Foreign Earned income shows up on Schedule 1 line 8 and flows to 1040 line 7a other income.

The foreign tax credit shows up on Schedule 3 line 1 flows to 1040 line 13b. Depending on the software you are using, it may or may not be easy to make it show up on those lines.

You will also need to consider exchange rates.

I use turbotax freedom edition. It’s free and covers all the foreign earned income stuff I need.

Thank you all for your suggestions. For the last 2 years my wife and I only eared income in Denmark and the total was really low (less than $10,000/year for each of us) I am looking for a way to file online (with my foreign only income) without paying anything. I tried efile (which I found on the IRS site) and they gave me no indication that I would need to pay until the final step. I’ll keep looking…
