My tenure here in China is almost at an end and I am working on wrapping everything up before I move back home.
My company recently got a visa company to help “cancel” my residence permit and replace it with a 0-entry temporary visa. It would appear that this process involves me giving them my passport for a week or so and them voiding the residence permit.
My question is… do I really need to do this? I leave June 28th and my residence permit expires on July 1st. If I just blow this off- are there any negative effects? I do need to occasionally come back to China for business (I will apply for a business visa once I get back)- but with me not canceling the permit will I get into trouble or get stopped when I try to apply for the business visa?

You’d be fine to go, as long as you have your letter confirming your Foreign Expert Certificate or Alien Employment License has been cancelled you should be fine to just leave. Your residence permit will be cancelled on March 1st anyway.
I might just blow it off the canceling if it. I am always nervous about giving away my passport while I am overseas.
A business visa is really easy to get for my company. I work for a huge multinational and getting a 10 year multi entry business visa is pretty routine and easy.
Nothing to “blow off”
The 30-day tourist visa gives you additional time to wrap up things, organizing your move, one last visit to your favorite bar, one last visit to your favorite happy ending place, some more time to experience the glorious 5000-year old culture (such as grandmas doing #2 on the sidewalk), etc..
If you don’t want the extra 30 days, that’s your choice.
Sounds good then. I’ll just let it expire and tell the visa people that I don’t want to stay here any longer after the expiry date.
The business visa is good now because it is good for unlimited entries over 10 years. This means I don’t have to have my passport hogged up each year with a new visa. It’s all free for me anyways.
I never am going to live here again, but it’s conceivable my company will send me for a week or so occasionally on business trips. They always tend to take good care of their engineers with business trips. I can bear one week at a time if I am hauled up at a five star hotel with all the bills paid. Air is still dirt, but the airline priced cognac from the minibar helps.
You have to cancel the work alien permit. Otherwise the company won’t be able to hire new “foreigners” (they have limited spots). HOWEVER do not cancel your Visa! Do not give them your passport. That means you should cancel the alien work permit (that brownish book) but not the visa on your passport. In your case, since you won’t be coming back to China it won’t make a difference, however somebody who wants to change his job within China must: 1- Cancel the work permit 2- Keep the “cancellation” paper they give you after cancelling the “work permit (it should be pink but the color might change) 3-Do not ever give them your passport to cancel your residence visa
Answering your question: Legally you have to cancel the visa but if you don’t cancel it, you won’t have any problem as long as you leave China before the visa expiration date. Afterwards you can apply to whatever type of visa you want (if you want to come back to China in the future)
