They charged me nearly USD 600 a day just for the room.. Geez!! One consultation with GP was 150 USD and I think it took less than 15 mins in all. I thought healthcare in US was expensive/ US style healthcare in China beats it.

Feel bad for passing these ridiculous expenses on to my company

    Erk !

Had a 1 hour consult with a GP at the Suzhou Kowloon Hospital (VIP/Foreigners section) and got my prescription for 201 RMB.

The place was lavish, huge, cleaner than my apartment and had a nice 1 to 1 chat with closed doors.

150 USD ? For 15 minutes ? You guys in Shanghai are getting taken for a ride !

Perhaps 190 RMB in train fares, 200 in taxis….all the way to Suzhou would be a MUCH cheaper option, for better, un rushed attention.

I refuse to attend a local Chinese Hospital.

But, if your company pays, who cares ?

However, I pay – and I’m happy to pay for 5 star at that price.

Kinda silly really since Suzhou Kowloon Hospital is a Shanghai Jiaotong Medical School teaching hospital…can you say L-O-C-A-L? or deos Shanghai managed not count?

Yeah. Sorry about my outburst, and you are 100% correct.

Kind of did a knee reaction when I saw the OP cite:

“One consultation with GP was 150 USD and I think it took less than 15 mins”.

Just thought I’d share my experience, although perhaps not relevant.

My “I refuse to attend a local Chinese Hospital” lash-out refers to being in a consulting room with 5 (or more) other patients, all yelling, waving X-Rays, blood tests, documents etc. and demanding quality time with the Doc when it’s My Turn.

Been there, out of pure ignorance but never again.

You know you’re in a dodgy hospital when there are cigarettes waiting for purchase in the vending machine along with candy and so on… in the foyer of the hospital.

Also, the Doc doesn’t wear gloves when examining you for an ear infection – and there’s fresh blood on the floor plus a dead cockroach in the corner. That’s the First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou Medical College = #1 Hospital in Suzhou (shudder).

I also feel a lot happier when I see a swarm of foreigners, mums and babies, patients having a quiet chat about cardiac surgery (in English) in that hospital.

First thing you notice in a western doctors’ office ? Their degree of MBBS on the wall and a bookshelf full of medical journals. Here ? Nada.

    I stand chastised.

^ makes more sense. been throughout the whole “local” scene as well as the Foreigner VIP clinics etc and I find no need to go to a 5-star-priced hospital unless its something really serious.

/profile/215-shindam/?do=hovercard” data-mentionid=”215″ href=”<___base_url___>/profile/215-shindam/” rel=””>>@shindam Yes, I had the same experience at Parkway Clinic.

The way they charge is criminal. Charge you a fee just to register as a customer with them and they do not tell you so when you first get there. It’s only after the consultation that they whack you with a huge bill which include this “registration fee”.

I’d thought they will be happy to have new customers instead they want you to pay them for the “privilege” of giving them the business. What crap!!

There are way better places to go then… My 5-minute consultation costs me US$260 including this fee.

    Ridiculous rite!

Hence if you dun wanna get fleeced, stay away.

Oh yes but they do a customer complaint service so when you get to them to complain of the charges, their favorite response is “we’ll look into it” but that’s all you’ll get from them.. Makes me sick all over but all I can tell them in the end is that they should not expect to see me back there.

Trouble here is that if they can communicate with us expats here in english then it’s like they have a licence to charge you what they please.

Although I am no big Fan of Worldlink / Parkway neither I have to say that they improved big time in their service since been taken over by Parkway.

I wanted a 2nd opinion on a diagnosis received in a local Hospital and Parkway screwed up big time – which resulted in a huge bill and even worse, a big scare on my wife and me.

Anyway, after consulting with my health insurance provider we challenged Parkway on their diagnosis and they did a great follow up / Customer service.

They asked me to come back to see their Chief Medicine guy, a specialist and paid for all and comped the whole bill.

They also offered to pay for a follow up check up with a 3rd party Hospital chosen by me in my home country the next time I go back. During the whole time they talked to us, told us what will happening on the billing side and reimbursed my Cards right away

For sure, they are very expensive for what they do – and I do go to local Hospitals for most of things.

But sometimes I rather pay a bit more and know they understand me. And as said, I do think they improved big time.

And who knows, maybe they will adjust their pricing a bit – one can hope.

The thing that concerns me at Parkway is lack of specialists in some areas and that they had to bring someone in to see my wife after she was admitted with high fever and they couldn’t figure out the problem. After few days they brought in a specialist from outside and he figured it out in less than 30 mins.

We are very happy with the OB/GYN but it’s a little scary to think of those cases that may arise that we went through recently. Not sure if other hospitals may have been any different but for the kind of money they charge I’d hope they’d have their bases completely covered.

I’ve paid a registration fee at a local hospital on about 3 occasions. i think it is normal here.

Parkway do not hide their charges, it would be sensible to ask before you go in to get an idea of it. If people pay it, why should they not charge that price? No-one forced you to go there. I’ve also not had a bad experience there though united family is probably the best expat hospital place here.

My husband and me had really bad and expensive experience at the Parkway. Since that never use it.

It is damn a lot of money place. Much more than even in Europe. We found this renai hospital, near the IKEA in XujiaHui. The consultation is 90 RMB. A vip room is 600 RMB per day. Kind of clean, has shower. it is local hospital but they have international department so guys speak english and some other European languages there. Have foreign physicians.

I just had an emergency appendix removal at Huashan Hospital, in their global medical practice. I had no idea what the bill would come to. When I told my colleagues the amount, they were absolutely floored. Fortunately, my insurance covered it all. The service and care was top-notch. I spent 1 night in the hospital. Had the room to myself with in-room shower/toilet.

Does anyone know what the going rate should be for this surgery? It was laproscopic method and I recovered in record time and hardly have any scars.

I have a friend who had seen a couple of doctors in parkway clinic in Nanjing Road. He was totally ripped off, I have to say. As everybody else has said, the consultation fee is outrageouss.

What is worse, they always send you to other hospital for the checkups, such as, MRI, blood check.

They make the fortune out of it. MRI only costs 500 -600 RMB in the hospital.

But they charge 10.000 and more from us.

For regular blood test is only cost maximum 100 RMB in the most expensive local hospital.

But when they charge us, it should be around 3000 to 4000 RMB.

What a bloodying greedy clinic!! How could they get away with this?

If you have to go there, good luck if they can let you know your problem.

Otherwise they have to see you again and again or have you run more tests before they are confident enough to make a diagnosis.

I know there is a high cost to run a clinic, but you don’t have to make a living by ripping off your patients or their insurance company.

Do it right and have more satisfied patients. What a shame!!

Thank God for insurance I guess — they are an American standard clinic or better) and they have American prices. No one forcing anyone to go.

I just had a so-called procedure done there, that lasted 5 seconds and consisted of a light being shoved deep into my throat and a doctor looking inside for 5 seconds and telling me i have something on my vocal cords.

Cost 3500 RMB, plus another 400 for the consultation. This was the only time i actually got irritated and asked “WHAT PROCEDURE???” but then they showed me the price list and i realized no one forced me to go.

I could have done it at a Chinese hospital for one 10th of the price or less, but if i have to do it again, I will still go to Parkway.

And a lot of people do, otherwise they would be out of business.

/profile/174-freedelia/?do=hovercard” data-mentionid=”174″ href=”<___base_url___>/profile/174-freedelia/” rel=””>>@freedelia Good luck. I hope you won’t get sick very often, if you have to see the doctor in Parkway.

As you said, no one force you there. Because the insurance covers for you, that is why they rip you off greedily and smiles all the way to their banks.

You are lucky you just had a throat problem. I know people spend 50,000 to 60,000 RMB for a simple surgery.

This only costs even in the expensive American hospital around 10,000 RMB. I also found out the nurses’s salary are definitely not 5-star hospital lever.
