GuestHi all, I am going to be posted to Shanghai soon. I would like to find out, if I am required to go for a medical check up, before allowing to work in Shanghai? If yes, what kind of medical check up and what will they check? Please kindly enlighten me on this. Thanks all…

GuestDepends on your visa type. If issued the F visa (business visa) then a medical screen is usually not required. If you are going to have a Z visa (work visa) then a medical screening is usually required. The check your vision, hearing, blood, stds, aids, hepatitis and a sonogram which no one knows what they are checking. Can be done in Shanghai at a clinic that is set up for the purpose, which is easier than having the screening done overseas and then translated.
I had the medical screening when issued my original Z visa and renewals of the visa did not require additional screens, however, in applying for a new Z visa (process begun from scratch) a med screen was not required. Not sure why.

GuestIf you get it done in Shanghai, the hospital will tell you that you have a fatty liver. They tell all foreigners they have fatty liver. I’ve got it (according to the examining doctor), and he told the German lady before me she had it too.

GuestI didn’t have the fatty liver, but they did tell my friend that!

Guesti got a fatty liver too! They do an ultrasound scan on your stomach (same gadget they use for pregnant women) to see inside your intestines and the liver. Whole experience is very weird. Expect to be frogmarched with a chart from one room to another. No personal chit chat. Just a load of foreigners being mass processed by people in white coats. Some of the nurses look nice though.
