I think it is best to start off by addressing the biggest elephant in the room. Thailand has some really really pretty girls. Now, this is not another case of an in-group bias where I’m praising my own people and culture, for a decade there has been a trend of cases where people traveled halfway across the world to look for a romantic partner in Thailand. Whether it’s because they are exotic, funny or understanding, there is a reason why travelers want Thai girlfriends. The problem is this leads to a growth of a huge Thai dating industry where many foreigners got cheated or scammed, leading to horrible marriages and financial devastation. Now these problems could be prevented at the very early stage, only if you know the best ways to finding and dating Thai girls, it may save you a heartbreak or two.

    Where to find Thai Girls

Biggest mistakes most people make in Thailand is that they fall prey to the tourist traps in Bangkok. It’s important to know that these are the places Thai people never venture to. If you want to be dating Thai girls for a long term relationship, or finding life partners. A Gogo bar should be a place to avoid.

    The Places to look

So the question remains. Where do you look for Thai women? When it comes to dating Thai girls, look for other places besides the obvious choices (such as all the party / night life venues). Thai people are most often friendly and easily approachable, which means finding and dating Thai girls are a lot easier than you make it out to be. Ask yourself, if you are a smart, capable, working, intelligent Thai women, where would you be hanging out? The thoughts of striking up conversations in public parks, shopping malls eg. Siam Paragon and bookstore may bring anxiety to some, but it will bring you the best results. The quality of potential romantic partners you meet during the day will quite often exceed those you meet at night. So next time you see a pretty Thai lady, go say “sawasdee krub”.

    Go Mobile

A lot of Thais are tech/mobile savvy. So if talking to Thai girls in broad daylight scare the life out of you, it is socially acceptable to go ahead and download dating apps such as Beetalk and Tinder. Now apps like these will bring you a mixed bag of results including subsequent scams and potential ladyboys (not that there is anything wrong with ladyboys), so I recommend you swipe right at your own discretion. However, the best part is that you will have a wide selection of dating partners, plus you don’t even have to utter a word.

Aside from dating apps, Thai people also use Facebook messages and Line very religiously. Instant messages are big in Thai culture and thai people are very responsive to texting.

    What not to do?

The thing about dating Thai girls, (or any girls who’s language you don’t speak) is that us guys often communicate the wrong message. Whether it’s the language barrier or the difference in cultural/social norms. It’s more important to not say the wrong thing, than saying the right thing. Hence, before we discuss any highly elaborated dating tactics, we should first focus on what to avoid doing.

    Don’t talk about these taboos

I understand that many people find the ability to discuss cultural taboos quite intellectually stimulating, but in Asian culture (and especially Thai). Talking about topics such as political party, Royal family, or religions can lead to your potential partner rejecting you completely (or hours of lecture). In either case, do avoid talking about sensitive topics.

    Don’t be too aggressive

Growing up in other culture, assertiveness and confidence are usually consider very important values. However, there is a fine line between being very confident/assertive and being aggressive/intimidating. Thai people are slightly more modest and timid (even guys), so you have to thread that line more carefully. Make no mistakes, it is important to be dominant, but pay great attention to social cues and avoid pushing too far. For example, ability to maintain a powerful eye contact with a girl is a rare trait that shows high confidence. While having too much physical contacts (being too touchy) would be considered ‘aggressive’ by Thai girls.

Remember, making mistakes certain mistakes such as these will put the girls in the defensive mode. While dating Thai girls, doing one wrong thing could lead to them being on guard and rejecting you, messing up the interactions completely.

    What to do?

Now that you know what NOT to do while dating Thai girls, let’s look at things to say and do to rack up some attraction points in your favor.

    Talk about Social circles

Thai people are collectivist in nature. They are community oriented, which means that being curious about people’s families and friends will help you a long way while dating Thai girls. Remember, people could be defined by who they spend the most time with. So knowing the core social circle will give you a window to their lives. Going the extra mile to meet up to get to know with her friends would give you a bigger social proof in her eyes too.

    Picking the right venues

Picking the right places and activities for your dates will be very important. Just remember to avoid the cliche that has been done to death like a restaurant and movies. Make sure you both do something fun. This makes dating Thai girls more interesting for you. Even if you don’t understand her, at least you know you will both have good experience.

    Food

    Roast cafe

Hint hint, you are currently in one of the Foodiest city in the world. There are hundreds of restaurants for you to venture into. You could also make it more fun and go food hopping. I can guarantee you that every Thai girl you will come across would love nothing more than a good food experience. Whether it’s the tried and true mom and pop’s places that you go all the time, or something completely new you want to try out. Luckily, we have laid out all the options you can comfortably choose from right here.

    Something fun and refreshing

    Artbox

The key is to avoid the cliche and choose activities that are stimulating and fun for both of you. Dating girls in Bangkok shouldn’t be shore, and you shouldn’t make it one. Running out of ideas? How about do what you like. If you like photography or soccer, why not take her to your next pickup soccer game.

    A glimpse to your life.

Most guys are often worried that the girls will be bored by the activities they find interesting. Guess what? It’s good for you to figure that out very early on. It is better that you find out whether or not you are compatible with a girl on the very first day, than finding that out after you are married. While you are dating Thai girls, show more than just your personality. Let them know what type of music you enjoy, books you like to read, or even your favorite football team.

That’s the brief and concise guide to dating Thai girls. If you have any other ideas or comments you would like to make further in this topic. Feel free to include that in the comment sections below. Have a great day!

I have been here 14 years and never really tried to learn Thai, here is a very good University called the American Alumni University that allows you to stop and start again at anytime. I dare say it is also stocked with some very attaractive ladies who are learning English or some other language.

I have also just discoverd Starbucks is also another great place in meeting Thais who can speak good English in Bangkok.

Years ago before the BTS my best way to pick up girls was on the bus which I am sure will still work to this day!

I would jump on the first one that came along that was airconditioned, hand over 20 Baht I did not have a clue where I was going, if a seat was spare with something that looked attractive I sat next to her and if not, waited around until something turned up, then try to start a conversation in English.

If she responded I was in and if not wait around until I achieved the success, then it was a simple task of arranging where to meet later, I then got off the bus with no clue where I was hail a taxi and return home.

    Hi ShExpat,

Rujin hospital is specilized in blood, burn treatment . Huashan Hospital is specialied in skin and heart problem treatment.

For OB/Gyn, Fudan women’s hospital ( TEL: 63770161, PUXI area, 419 FANGXIE ROAD ) and shanghai No 1 women and baby hosptial (tel: 54035206, PUXI AREA, 536 Changle Road)

Right now, in Shanghai, many big hospitals have VIP department providing the best doctors in the hospitals to treat oversea Chinese patients and foreigners. The only difference between VIP service and regular service in the hospital is the registration fee. The rest of medical treatment cost is the same. VIP clinic provide a nurse working with you to fill the prescription, take patient to do lab tests etc. Usually the doctor can speak english. With VIP service, you will have a professional help in the whole process. And the good thing is that the VIP service price is much cheaper than the others.

The VIP registration fee is about 100 – 130 RMB per visit, the regular registration fee is about 10- 15 RMB. the doctors in VIP department are usually at Medical Director level with many years of experience in practice. Lots of medical experts have one day or two day working in VIP clinic every week.

Hope this info is helpful to you.

I use the Huashan hospital Ob/Gyn services because we are having a baby in a few weeks. I’m pretty happy with their service and the doctors are good (and speak English).

Huashan (aka American/Sino OBGYN on the 14th floor) is pretty expensive -about 40,000RMB for the delivery + 3 days inpatient and around 15,000RMB for all the prenatal visits.

I’m not sure how much the regular gynaecological services are, though. Ruijin is probably less expensive, and I have had some local friends who were pleased with their services.

I gave birth in Ruijin hospital around 2 years ago. In the Guang Ci hospital (inside ruijin hospital). The doctor is great and speak english, service is good.

They have a paediatric on site.(just next building) and I know they’ve been improve the ob/gyn section, by moving the maternity section to the 3rd floor of the guang ci hospital, and all babies will be rooming in with the mother immediately. And I paid all together for that time around RMB 25.000-27.000. Though now there is a rise in the price.

As for Huashan they are modern, nice hospital, everybody speak good english. They have package 40.000rmb for natural birth and 60.000 RMB for c-section.they have 4D ultra sound, they will take you home with the ambulance.

But as for what i know from my friend that gave birth there last year ,they don’t have paediatrics section on site. so just in case the baby is small or premature they must transfer the baby to the children hospital .

I don’t really like the idea to move such a small infant around the city. So this what happened to my friends, she stay in huashan for 7 days and the baby was in the other hospital.(her baby was abit smaller than full term baby , to do the good check up, and to put inside the incubator they must move the baby to Shanghai children hospital)

She even never saw the baby for the first week, she must stop the breastfeeding , and imagine the frustation of not being able to see your baby for days!

The do have paediatrician in huashan but only to do the basic check up after the baby is born.

You can go to the hospital and have a look and talk to the doctor before you make your decision.

Based on the horror stories I have heard from those who have used Ruijin hospital for delivery, I would never recommend Ruijin to anybody (unless they wanted a chance of experiencing first hand a C section with zero anaesthesia – both during and post op).

Apart from that, being male, I cannot comment on the Ob/Gyn facilities at either hospital, although I have turned to the foreign clinic at Huashan a couple of times – the variance in quality of service was huge and I met doctors there who were skilled and compassionate and others whose medical knowledge barely exceeded those of an educated layman and, if they actually cared about their patient’s health, did a wonderful job of concealing it.

I still tend to recommend Huashan to those looking for a midpoint between the basic < 10 RMB "fully local" care (which you can indeed get if you speak Chinese or are with a speaker, although sometimes you might need to put your foot down) and the USD 100 Parkway-type service. Oh, bear in mind that sometimes the doctors you get for the inflated foreign/VIP price are exactly the same as those you get for the Chinese price, although they may (only may) speak a bit more English. If cost is an issue, watch carefully what doctors are prescribing. Doctors are sometimes under pressure to boost sales at their hospital pharmacies, which means they will prescribe you with many unnecessary (e.g. expensive imported vitamins or brand name off-patent medications) yet expensive medications. Oh, and they just love putting you on a drip and putting a liter or so of saline/dextrose into your blood regardless of the specifics of your complaint. I personally am not sure of this practice (do you really want to spend 5 hours in a ward with poor sanitation with some serious sick people?).

My experience at Ruijin was also terrible. My wife is going elsewhere to have her bub in November based on my personal experience, as follows:

I went one afternoon with a badly infected shoulder that was spreading through my neck and chest, and – in front of my then employer and wife mind you – the admitting doctor suggested, with a barely even cursory examination, of the problem, that:

    1) I should go back to my own country for treatment for probable cancer

    2) It might be leukaemia

    3) Maybe I’ve got AIDS – oh, do you go to prosititutes? She opined. No, never, but I imagined the beside manner is probably better. I imagine it would also a good deal cheaper.

She ordered a battery of, mostly superfluous, tests and prescribed antibiotics which I had already written down I was allergic to. Then an alternative, also on the list of allergic reactions.

Nearly 2,000RMB later I was out the door and absolutely nothing useful achieved, and still with a very high fever and barely able to move with pain.

After that we’d all concluded that I had in fact seen a working girl – but this one was wearing a white coat and stethoscope.

FWIW My wife’s happy with the Pudong branch of Shanghai’s 1st Baby and Maternal Hospital

Hi everybody. I need a gynaecologist visit, like a normal woman check up.

    Thanks a lot

/profile/3-shexpat/?do=hovercard” data-mentionid=”3″ href=”<___base_url___>/profile/3-shexpat/” rel=””>>@shexpat  Make sure you have good health insurance!

Whenever you have a serious problem, go to Hong Kong or Bangkok. I have never seen a place here, be it a local hospital or one of the expensive ‘Western’ ones that got it right. I just went through a scary, stressful, and mind boggling episode with one of the ‘Western’ ones last week.

So I am not dissing the Chinese hospitals here, but the whole lot. Really. In all my travels this has been one of the worst places for health care for me. Don’t get me started about the rest of my family.
